In just three months at Dismas House, Bryan Dailey has experienced the kind of transformation that turns quiet gratitude into unmistakable joy. In fact, every time he talks about the place that helped change his life, his eyes light up and he becomes immediately positive about his personal experience.
Before arriving at Dismas House, life felt overwhelming for Bryan for many years. “I didn’t cope well with adulting and responsibility before Dismas,” Bryan shared honestly. “If I wanted to change my life, I had to get away from where my problems were.”
That decision brought him to Dismas House, a place Bryan now calls life-changing.
From the moment he arrived, Bryan felt something different. “The love here! You can feel it surround you,” he said. “It’s a blessing to be here at Dismas House. It motivates me to keep being better.” Dismas House didn’t just offer him a safe place to live. It provided structure, accountability, and constant support. “There’s someone here 24/7 that I can talk to,” Bryan said. “Dismas House believes in community.”
That support helped Bryan take several meaningful steps forward. He is now living proof of what transformation looks like when opportunity meets commitment.
In just 120 days, Bryan’s hard work has paid off in remarkable ways. Already, he has regained his driver’s license, gotten a job, enrolled in the Tennessee Vocational Program, repaired his credit and started HVAC school.
Whether going to work or school, Bryan doesn’t just show up, he fully participates. This month alone, his grades improved from a 96 to a 98 at HVAC school and he’s on track to make the President’s List for four consecutive months, all while maintaining perfect attendance. His instructor, impressed by his dedication, invited him to attend a conference and offered to help him gain hands-on field experience through a professional contact. Amazingly, Bryan is accomplishing all of this while working full-time on the graveyard shift.
Bryan recently graduated from the Dismas House 90-day program, a milestone he calls “a big step.” He had his graduation certificate laminated to preserve it and did the same with each letter recognizing his President’s List and perfect attendance honors. He keeps them in his Dismas House welcome backpack, ready to consult whenever he needs extra motivation.
For each successful month, Bryan earns a gold, five-point President’s List pin. He places the pins on his bedside table each night as a reminder of what he has accomplished and proudly wears them on his school uniform. He is expecting his fourth pin at the end of this month.
“Thinking back to what I started with and what I have now,” Bryan said, “it puts a smile on my face. I’m actually loving life right now. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to wake up and be okay with life.”
Much of Bryan’s motivation comes from his three children. Since returning home, he’s seen a difference. “I can see the happiness in my kids’ faces,” he said. His youngest son texts him every morning before school: “I love you. Hope you have a great day!” Bryan isn’t used to that kind of connection, and he deeply treasures it.
His relationships with his family have grown significantly. For the first time in eight years, he spent Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve with them. “Me leaving and coming back meant I had to reconcile a lot of relationships,” he shared. “But it’s been worth it.”
Bryan is also building a stable future. Through his job and the life skills he gained at Dismas House, he’s developed financial responsibility. He now has three bank accounts, saved up enough money for a vehicle, and raised his credit score from 486 to 582. For the first time ever, he was able to purchase a car in his own name with full coverage insurance, which now allows him to visit his family more often on weekends. “I do it for my kids,” he said. “I owe them so much.”
Today, Bryan is deeply committed to his new path. His faith keeps him grounded, and the structure of Dismas House helps him stay focused.
Throughout his journey, Bryan credits the people at Dismas House who believed in him. His Case Manager, Deasree, has been someone he can be fully honest with, and Clinical Director Kim has offered steady encouragement. Fellow residents Antwon and Mike bring laughter, positivity, and accountability. One conversation with Case Manager Chad proved pivotal. “He told me, ‘You’re obviously smart. You should pursue your education again,’” Bryan recalled. “One week later, I was going to school.”
When asked what Dismas House means to him, he didn’t hesitate: “Transformation,” Bryan said. “With the aid, assistance and resources I’ve received through Dismas House, I have been able to accomplish dreams and goals in 120 days that I haven’t or couldn’t make possible in the whole 38 years of my life. Dismas House has opened the door to a better future.“
To those who support the program, he shared one final message: “You are a blessing. You don’t have to do this, but you choose to. You go the extra mile to put hope back into us. I, for one, am very grateful for that opportunity.”
