From Barriers to Breakthroughs: Celebrating Success Through IPS Supported Employment

Dismas House recently hosted its Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Steering Committee Meeting, bringing together more than 20 stakeholders, community partners, employment specialists, and supporters dedicated to advancing employment opportunities for individuals facing mental health and reentry challenges.

The morning began with welcoming remarks from IPS leadership, including Chief Program Officer Kim Demetrio, IPS Manager Grayce Gadson, and IPS Employment Specialist Dr. Rochelle Robinson. Attendees also heard from Dismas House CEO Steven Murff, who emphasized the importance of collaboration, innovation, and community engagement in helping individuals achieve meaningful employment and independence.

Guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast while networking with fellow professionals and partners.

Throughout the meeting, members of the IPS team shared updates on program outcomes and emerging trends affecting employment services.

Current IPS program outcomes shared during the meeting included:

• Members Served: 68
• Vocational Rehabilitation Participants: 48
• Members Employed: 30
• Employment Rate: 44%
• Members in Education Programs: 4
• Referrals Received: 122

These numbers reflect the growing demand for IPS services and the effectiveness of the evidence-based model in helping individuals achieve employment and educational success.

Strong Community Partnerships Drive Opportunities

A key theme throughout the meeting was the power of collaboration. Dismas House continues to work alongside numerous community organizations, educational institutions, and employers committed to creating pathways to success.

Employment partners continue to provide meaningful job opportunities across industries, including hospitality, healthcare, retail, logistics, food service, construction, and event services.

Addressing Emerging Employment Trends

The meeting featured informative presentations on current workforce challenges and opportunities.

Teferi Fantahun presented “IPS and Tech Trends: Production and Utilization,” highlighting how technology continues to shape workforce participation and employment readiness. While AI has proven to be a useful tool in managing caseloads, it cannot replace the connections our IPS team makes on a daily basis by meeting potential employers and clients face-to-face. 

Lorraine Wade presented “Larger Barriers Affecting Employment: Housing Trends,” sparking valuable discussion among attendees. Several housing experts in attendance contributed their knowledge and perspectives, creating a meaningful dialogue about one of the most significant barriers facing job seekers today.

A Powerful Story of Recovery and Success

One of the most inspiring moments of the day came from an IPS participant, Brandon H., who shared his personal journey. He spoke about how IPS services provided support, encouragement, and opportunities that helped them secure employment and thrive in their recovery journey.

His testimony served as a powerful reminder of why IPS matters and how meaningful employment can transform lives.

Looking Ahead

The event concluded with a lively game of bingo, networking opportunities, and a group photo commemorating a successful gathering.

Dismas House and its partners remain committed to expanding access to IPS Supported Employment services and helping individuals build brighter futures through meaningful work, education, and community support.
